Jef Geys: Catalogue Raisonnable & Ghislaine Leung: Holdings (2015–2025)

Free, no RSVP required

For this special event in New York, the Renaissance Society, Chicago and WIELS, Brussels, come together to celebrate the release of two major monographs: Ghislaine Leung: Holdings (2015–2025) and Jef Geys: Catalogue Raisonnable. Produced in conjunction with recent exhibitions by Leung and Geys at the Renaissance Society and WIELS, respectively, each book offers a larger view of the artist’s practice and how their work unsettles the boundaries between art and daily life. A discussion featuring Ghislaine Leung, Karsten Lund from the Renaissance Society, and Charlotte Friling and Dirk Snauwaert from WIELS will draw out resonances and dissonances between these two singular artists of different generations, following an introduction to each of these publications.

Jef Geys: Catalogue Raisonable is the first comprehensive monograph devoted to the Belgian artist Jef Geys (1934-2018). Structured around his 'list of works'–an inventory of 844 entries started in the 1960s–the book brings together archives, texts, and over a thousand illustrations. It reveals the aesthetic, social, political, and humorous dimensions of his work, while highlighting his ties to the Campine region and his pedagogical engagement as a schoolteacher.

Published by WIELS in collaboration with MER and Borgerhoff & Lamberigts.
Edited by Charlotte Friling, with assistance from Oriana Lemmens & Kaat Obbels.
Introduction by Dirk Snauwaert.
Special thanks to the Geys Estate.

Ghislaine Leung: Holdings (2015-2025) is a new book that reflects on ten years of the London-based artist’s work. Central to Leung’s practice are concise “scores,” written descriptions that outline the materials and implementation of work, which an institution then interprets and performs. This publication grows out of Leung’s exhibition Holdings at the Renaissance Society in 2024, which debuted a set of new scores, but ultimately it looks far beyond it and behind it. For the first time in one place, Leung offers a comprehensive list of her scores, plus the non-score works that have punctuated her exhibitions. The book features essays by Hettie Judah, Mike Sperlinger, Eleanor Ivory Weber, and Renaissance Society curator Karsten Lund, as well as a lively conversation between Bruce Hainley, Karsten Lund, Ramaya Tegegne, and Helena Vilalta.
