Alexander Zevin: Liberalism at Large

Talk & Book Launch
December 16, 2019, 7pm

Alexander Zevin's Liberalism at Large is the first critical biography of the Economist newspaper, which, since 1843, has been the most tireless and internationally influential champion of the liberal cause anywhere in the world. But what exactly is liberalism, and how has its message evolved? Zevin presents a history of liberalism on the move, confronting the challenges that classical doctrine left unresolved—the rise of democracy, the expansion of empire, the ascendancy of finance—holding a mirror to the politics and personalities that helped shape a liberal world order now under increasing strain.

For the launch of Liberalism at Large, published by Verso Books, Zevin will discuss the themes of his book and the implications of his argument for understanding the current 'crisis for liberalism' with Adam Tooze, the Shelby Cullom Davis Professor of History at Columbia University, and Atossa Araxia Abrahamian, senior editor at The Nation. The conversation will be followed by a book signing and reception with the author.

This event is presented in partnership with Verso Books and Apogee Graphics.
