Third Annual "Selections" Show Opens at Artists Space on October 1st
Artists Space will open its Fall season on October 1st with the third annual Selections exhibition, based exclusively on the Artists File. The show is also the opening event of Artists Space's Tenth Anniversary and will be on view through October 29th.
In recognition of its first decade, Artists Space invited three individuals all of whom had close ties with the organization, to select three artists all of whom have had close ties with the organization, to select three artists each from the Artists File for presentation in this exhibition. These three selectors include Donald Droll, current President of the Board of Directors; Trudie Grace, co-founder and first President of the Board, on which he is still an active member. Linda Shearer, current Executive Director, has also selected three artists.
The twelve participating artists are Romany Eveleigh, Jane Kaplowitz, and Colin Thomson (selected by Droll); Claudia Fitch, Barbara Friedman, and Gary Perkins (selected by Grace); Fred Guyot, George Palumbo, and Michael Torlen (selected by Sandler); and Mark Innerst, Amanda Kyser, and Bob Smith (selected by Shearer).
The Artists File is an open slide registry for New York State artists not represented by commercial or cooperative galleries. It presently numbers over 2,000 artists and is an active resource which is consulted by over 300 art professionals and members of the public annually, as well as the Artists Space staff. This service is provided free of charge to both participating artists and professionals and, importantly, it provides unaffiliated artists with a viable outlet for their work that is directed toward a broader audience. Founded in 1974 as one of the initial service programs of the organization, the Artists File is an especially fitting resource on which to base the opening exhibition of Artists Space's Tenth Anniversary year.
The work in Selections ranges from abstract and figurative painting to sculpture incorporating light projections. The moods vary from serious and thoughtful to dramatic and humorous. Indeed, the variety of this work points to the extraordinary diversity of talent to be found among the many artists registered in the Artists File.
