Artists Space
Selections from the Unaffiliated Artists File
Artists Space will be opening a group exhibition on March 14th of thirteen New York artists. The show marks the first curatorial effort by the CVA's new Executive Director, Linda Shearer, since she assumed the position last Fall.
The participating artists are RICHARD R. ARMIJO, JAY G. COOGAN, KATHLEEN GILJE, SIDNEY McELHENNEY, JEFFREY MENDOZA, MIKE METZ, RONALD MOROSAN, ANDREW NASH, MAUREEN PUSTAY, ERICKA ROTHENBERG, CONRAD VOGEL, JULIE WACHTEL and SUAN YELAVICH. They have been selected by Linda Shearer from the nearly 1500 artists presently represented in the CVA's Unaffiliated Artists Slide File.
The Unaffiliated Artists Slide File, housed at Artists Space, is an open registry of New York State artists not represented by commercial or cooperative galleries. A fertile and active resource, it is used by dealers, curators, and collectors, as well as other artists.
As Artists Space is committed to the exposure and presentation of new and experimental activity in the visual arts, this file provides a sorely needed outlet for serious artists whose work is not accessible elsewhere.
The artists in the show represent a balance between painting, sculpture, and the more difficult area to classify that questions and falls somewhere between both. No matter what stylistic direction the work may take, each of the artists is evolving a highly personal and unique form of expression.
The show will be accompanied by an illustrated catalogue, which will draw further attention to the range and quality of this work.
The CVA hopes that the exhibition and catalogue will further serve to promote awareness of the existence of this important resource.
Programming at Artists Space is partially supported by funds from the New York State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.
