Los Angeles-based artist Nicole-Antonia Spagnola will make her New York debut with Anti-Genesis, an exhibition of new multi-media works. The series takes as its starting point a selection of re-filmed YouTube videos of Italian hardcore songs affiliated with the 1980s Milanese squat Virus. Like Warhol screen tests, these single-take 8mm films of the songs and their album covers become documents of both their low-fi nature and crude distribution. Spagnola further amalgamates these handheld re-recordings by digitizing them back to video, rejoining the image with a ripped audio file, and presenting them as an ensemble on flat-screen monitors blithely resting on cafe chairs throughout the gallery.
