Artists Space is pleased to present Housecalls, an exhibition of live drawing sessions by New York–based artist Drake Carr unfolding within an ever-changing installation at The Armory Show. Artists Space is the 2023 Armory Spotlight presentation, located at Booth N10.

For Housecalls, Carr has invited individuals to pose for portraits to be drawn onsite, extending his practice of working by commission in patrons’ homes. This portraiture performance will take place over the duration of The Armory Show, where visitors will see the artist at work in an atelier-like setting. Carr will explore the theatrical nature of his practice, inviting the subject, artist, and onlookers to participate in the experience.

Carr invited four subjects to sit for portraits, one for each day of the fair. They are all well-known for their singular personal style, which has had tangible effects on New York culture. Carr will alter the booth's decor to echo each subject’s own domestic environment, encouraging the sitter to both look and feel more “at home” amid the swarming atmosphere of the art fair. The space’s architecture will both reveal and conceal the activity within, offering privacy for the portrait session while at the same time inviting visitors to peer into the partially visible studio of an artist at work.
