UniBodies is a collaboration between PATTERNS, a Los Angeles based practice lead by architect Marcelo Spina, and the fabrication studio Kreysler & Associates, headed by Makai Smith. UniBodies is driven by PATTERNS’ ongoing design research on monocoque structures and their impact in architectural form and tectonics, and the expertise of K&A in composites and digital fabrication.
Conceptually, UniBodies is based on the capacity of single and composite shell constructions to challenge the hierarchy and separation between structure and skin. Integrating the processes of fabrication, production and assembly streamlines construction while also allows for an advanced degree of technological, formal and material innovation.
PATTERNS: Marcelo Spina, Marcus Friesl, Jooyoung Chun, Seyavash Zohoori.
Kreysler & Associates: Bill Kreysler and Makai Smith
