Artists Space Books & Talks
55 Walker Street

For the final program of Pride Goes Before a Fall / Beware of a Holy Whore / Mise en Abyme, Artists Space presents readings by Joey De Jesus, Dawn Lundy Martin, and Morgan Ritter. Following a series of readings held at Artists Space Books & Talks under the title In Visible Architectures in 2015, these will call attention to the role of performance as a constituent rather than secondary language within poetic presentation.

Joey De Jesus is a Bronx-born, queer Nuyorican poet whose work has appeared or is forthcoming in Barrow Street, Beloit Poetry Journal, Brooklyn Magazine, The Cortland Review, Devil's Lake, Drunken Boat, Guernica, Harriet, RHINO, Southern Humanities Review, Versal and elsewhere. Joey edits poetry for Apogee Journal and lives in Brooklyn.

Dawn Lundy Martin is a poet, essayist, and conceptual
video artist. She is the author of three books of poems
and three chapbooks, including most recently, Life in a
Box is a Pretty Life
(Nightboat Books, 2015). Martin is a
co-founder of the Black Took Collective, an experimental
performance art/poetry group of three, and a member
of HOWDOYOUSAYYAMINAFRICAN?, a global arts
collective. She has been awarded the 2015 Lambda
Literary Award for Lesbian Poetry and a 2016 Investing in
Professional Artists Grant from the Pittsburgh Foundation
and the Heinz Endowments. Martin is Associate
Professor of English at the University of Pittsburgh.

Morgan Ritter's visual and written work has been exhibited at institutions such as the Portland Institute of Contemporary Art, LUMA Foundation, Zurich, Sunlan Lighting, Portland and Centre Pompidou, Paris. She has a BFA from the Pacific Northwest College of Art (2011) and works at Yale Union, an artist-run contemporary art center in Portland. Recent activity includes a two-person exhibition with Lisa Radon at RONGWRONG, Amsterdam, a poetry reading at Shanaynay, Paris, and an upcoming exhibition at The Middler, New York in August.
